Privacy Policy — Jalees
Jalees works without an account, and your reading stays on your device. An account is optional; with one, your reading syncs through Jalees's server so it follows you across your devices. No ads, no tracking, and your data is never sold.
Without an account
You don't need an account to use Jalees. Your books, plans, reading logs, notes, quotes and settings are stored only on your device. Book search and cover-photo reading still pass through Jalees's server, as described below, without being tied to any account.
Your account
An account is optional. You sign in with Apple, Google, or a code sent to your email. The account itself is held by Clerk, the sign-in provider, which stores your email, your name, a username if you set one and a profile photo if you add one, along with your active sessions and each one's device, browser and IP address. Your profile photo is served from a public link. Jalees's server keeps only your display name, your photo's link and whether you've chosen to stay anonymous. It never stores your email.
Sync
Once you sign in, your books and their editions, plans, reading logs, notes, quotes and rest days are stored on Jalees's server (hosted on Convex) so they follow you across your devices. They are tied to your account and shown to no one else. Notification settings stay on the device.
Ratings and reviews
Your ratings and reviews are public: every reader sees them alongside your display name and photo. Your name comes from your account; if the account has no name, the part of your email before the @ is used. You can choose to stay anonymous, and then neither your name nor your photo is shown. Ratings and reviews imported from Goodreads are published the same way once you're signed in.
Reports and moderation
Any reader can report a review. Once three different readers report it, it is hidden automatically until I review it myself and restore or remove it. Readers can also flag duplicate books in the catalog. No one but me sees the reports.
The shared catalog
While you're signed in, every book in your library joins a shared catalog that all readers search, including books you added before signing in or imported from Goodreads: title, author, editions, publisher, year and ISBN. The catalog doesn't record who added a book, and the book stays in it after you delete your account.
Book search
What you search for is sent through Jalees's server to Google Books and Open Library to find matching books. It isn't saved with your account.
Cover photos
If you choose to add a book by photographing its cover, the photo is sent through Jalees's server and the Vercel AI Gateway to an Anthropic Claude model, which reads the title and author. Jalees doesn't store the photo. To limit abuse, the server counts scans per device using a random identifier iOS assigns to the app, which isn't linked to your account. Barcode scanning happens entirely on your device.
Camera and photos
The camera is used only to scan barcodes and photograph covers. On devices without a camera, you can pick a cover photo from your library instead, just as you pick a profile photo. The app only ever receives the photo you choose.
On your device
Jalees's notifications are local: they're scheduled on your device, with no push service involved. The home-screen widget reads your data from the device. A Goodreads export is read on your device and never uploaded; only its titles and ISBNs are looked up in the catalog to match books.
No tracking
No ads, no analytics, no third-party tracking of any kind. Your data is never sold or shared for advertising.
Deleting your data
Delete your account from the account settings in the app. This deletes your Clerk account, then your data on Jalees's server: your profile, synced reading data, ratings, reviews and reports. Books added to the shared catalog stay, not linked to you. If the app says some of your data couldn't be deleted, email me and I'll remove it. Signing out or deleting your account also erases your reading data from the device, and deleting the app removes everything it stores there.
